General FAQ

Below you will find answers to general Frequently Asked Questions about ESDC.

What is the European Swing Dance Championships?

The European Swing Dance Championships (ESDC) is an international dance contest to support the development of European Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa and other swing dances, through competitive dancing and showcase. ESDC 2015 will be a 4-day event including dance workshops with world-class instructors, dance contests open to dancers from around the world, and four nights of social dancing with DJs and live jazz music.

When and where is it?

ESDC 2015 will be held in London, England on 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th October 2015, and will be proudly hosted at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, near Heathrow Airport (140 Bath Road, UB3 5AW). ESDC 2013 was also held in London, while ESDC 2011 and 2012 were held in the city of Barcelona, Spain. No ESDC was held in 2014, because of the centennial celebrations held that year in honour of the late Frank Manning.

I don’t want to compete, can I still come?

Yes. Many people come to attend the parties and watch the competitions, or to take the workshops with world-class instructors. Competing is not compulsory!

I’m not a dancer, can I come just to watch?

Yes! Just buy a Ballroom Pass for the day you wish to attend. Many non-dancing spectators come each year to enjoy watching the contests, listening to the bands and soaking up the swing atmosphere. The important thing to know is there is no spectator seating – watching the competitions is standing room only.

What hashtag should I use to post about the event?

Give us a shout out using hashtag #esdc2015

What is the official language of the European Swing Dance Championships?

The official language of the event is English. All classes will be taught in English and competitions will be run in English.

I’m trying to plan which dance shoes to bring – what are the dancefloors like?

The stunning ESDC dance floors are provided by XL Dancefloors. This is a family-run business, and you will see father-and-son team John and Christian Armstrong-Holmes throughout the weekend managing the floors – grab them for a chat, they are passionate about dancefloors! These dancefloors are highly sprung – you’ll feel light as air dancing on them all weekend, and your jumps and airsteps will fly! The hand finished Russian Birch panels ‘kiss fit’ into place (with no gaps or ridges between the panels), so the dancefloor surface is perfectly smooth. Because the dancefloors are freshly polished when they are installed for us at the Radisson, the surface is fairly “slow” (meaning on the sticky side), so we recommend wearing suede or leather soled dance shoes. Rubber-soled shoes will probably be too sticky. Please make sure you are wearing non-marking soles, and dance-only shoes (not street shoes) to help us protect these beautiful floors.

What will the weather be like?

October is Autumn in London. Temperatures will range from 8-15° C (46-59° F). Although, weather won’t bother us, since we’ll be inside the lovely Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel all weekend long!

Can I bring flyers for my event or business?

Yes! Swing dance event organisers and those with businesses related to jazz and swing dancing, will be able to place their flyers on a promotional table.

Who runs ESDC?

ESDC is run by the registered company European Swing Dance Championships Ltd (company no. 8446637 registered in England & Wales). The director of European Swing Dance Championships Ltd is Sharon Davis. Here’s a message from Sharon:

My mission is to create a world-class event to support the development of swing dances in Europe, and promote jazz-age dances, their music and culture. I hope to give European dancers an opportunity to showcase their talents to the international community, whilst also honoring the rich history of Lindy Hop and other jazz dances, and preserving their spirit. I’m here to help, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Also, I know there will always be bugs and problems at any big event, but I try to make ESDC better and better every year. So I’d love to hear your feedback, complaints, compliments and suggestions, and I promise I’ll do everything in my power to improve ESDC each year. And of course, the real stars behind ESDC are my amazing team of instructors, judges, DJs, MCs, musicians, crew and volunteers, without whom such a huge undertaking would not be possible. All my love and gratitude to this amazing team, and to everyone who comes to support and enjoy ESDC!
